Bakuriani World Championships: Merlin Surget takes bronze with Chloé Trespeuch
Unity is strength! Unhappy with the individual events the day before, Merlin Surget and Chloé Trespeuch shone in the mixed team snowboard cross on 2nd March 2023, at the World Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia.
The two athletes won the bronze medal, behind Britain’s Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale (gold) and Austria’s Jakob Dusek and Pia Zerkhold (silver).
In the individual event, Merlin finished fifth at the Bakuriani Worlds, after successfully winning the small final. A great result for the native of Les Houches, barely a month after winning his first snowboard cross World Cup event in Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy, mentioned in a previous Newsletter.
Merlin Surget’s sponsor for the second year in a row, the Chamonix Sotheby’s International Realty team warmly congratulates the snowboarder for his performances!

Gabriel Loppé: the magnificent retrospective of the Fort de Bard (Italy)
Chamoniard by adoption, painter and mountaineer Gabriel Loppé (1825-1913) was one of the most fervent ambassadors of the valley through his paintings and his relationships. The Fort de Bard, located in Aosta valley in Italy, has devoted a large exhibition to him until 14th January 2024.
Paintings, drawings, photographs... nearly 100 works of art are presented to understand all the facets of this essential figure of the valley, summarised in the title of the exhibition: "Gabriel Loppé, artist, mountaineer and traveller".
The curators, Anne Friang (Friends of Gabriel Loppé association) and William Mitchell (John Mitchell gallery in London), selected 65 paintings from public and private collections. These paintings are a true retrospective of the artist’s work, covering nearly 50 years of his artistic life, from the 1860s to the beginning of the 20th century.
In addition to a complete presentation of his work, visitors will discover his mountaineering equipment, exhibited exclusively for the first time.
Renowned mountaineer, Gabriel Loppé painted the high mountains with geographical precision. Mountaineers of the time used his canvases to prepare their ascents. Fascinated by Mont Blanc – which according to legend, he climbed about forty times – he is a pioneer in the painting of snowy landscapes, alongside Monet and Courbet.
His work is an exciting testimony of mountain panoramas from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.
Find out all the information about the exhibition on the Fort de Bard website.

Gabriel Loppé and Chamonix
The painter discovered Chamonix in 1849, at the age of 24. He stayed there every summer from 1851. In 1869, he rented a plot of land in the village of Chamonix on which he set up his workshop in a chalet. A year later, he built another chalet to serve as an exhibition space. The latter was transformed into the Loppé Museum by his granddaughter, Gabrielle, when she inherited it in 1925. On her death in 1978, the museum was sold and transformed into accommodation.
In Chamonix, some of his paintings can be seen in the Salon du Majestic, the congress centre located in the town centre. Source: Les amis de Gabriel Loppé.
