Chamonix: activities to do with the family

Chamonix: activities for the whole family!

This week, Chamonix Sotheby’s International Realty is introducing you to lots of ideas for family outings. Sports, mountains, nature, exhilarating sensations or cultural activities…follow our guide!

Chamonix: sports activities to do with your family

If you want to pass on your passion for the mountains to your children, you are in the right place! Chamonix is the ideal place to discover and try out skiing, climbing, mountaineering and many other sports disciplines at all ages.

Many ski areas have slopes for children and beginners and allow you to ski with your family safely.

Examples include:

  • The family friendly Les Houches village ski resort
  • Les Planards (Chamonix)
  • Vormaine
  • The Chosalets (Argentière)
  • Le Clos du Savoy (Chamonix centre)
  • La Poya (Vallorcine)

If you are an ice-skating fan, you can also enjoy the different ice rinks in the valley, or watch a family hockey game!

Supervised activities for children

In Chamonix, many clubs welcome your children to take part in different sports, including:

  • Skiing
  • Climbing
  • Hiking
  • Mountain biking

Summer and winter alike, the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix also offers many activities for children and teenagers to introduce them to the joys of the mountains. The programme includes rafting, canyoning, via ferrata and mountaineering.

Nature activities for parents and children

In Chamonix, you are immersed in an exceptional natural setting at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif: the perfect opportunity to share leisurely moments with your children and to discover nature.

Here are some ideas of outdoor activities to do with your family:

  • The Aiguille du Midi (from 5 years old) is one of the must-see visits of your stay in Chamonix. The cable car takes you up to over 3800 metres above sea level and the famous “step into the void” - to test out your susceptibility to vertigo - will offer you unforgettable memories.
  • The Montenvers train and the Mer de Glace. Take the iconic red cog train and discover a mythical glacier! Don’t forget to venture into the impressive ice cave.
  • Le Parc du Merlet offers snowshoe hikes during the winter season. Located at 1500 metres above sea level, this majestic site allows you to observe the fauna (bouquetins, marmots, chamois) and the mountain flora through hiking trails that are accessible to the whole family.
  • The Glacier des Bossons, one of the largest icefalls in Europe, is accessible via a chairlift that takes visitors from Chamonix to the foot of the glacier.
  • The Gorges de la Diosaz, located in Servoz, offer a beautiful path suspended between waterfalls and forest along the rock face, which extends over 1.3 kilometres. This listed site is a fascinating natural sight for the young and old alike.
  • The sleigh dog walk allows you to discover the mountain landscapes in a unique way alongside animals.
  • The Parc d’Amusement du Pays du Mont-Blanc, located in Les Planards, offers many activities for all ages. The main attraction, the Alpine Coaster Luge, will offer you amazing sensations with its 1.3 km of tracks on rails. Available from 3 years old.
  • The Microlight flight over the Mont Blanc massif (from 6 years old), to discover the mountain from a new point of view.

Rich and varied cultural animations

Cinema, shows, concerts, exhibitions, readings … throughout the year you will find a complete, rich and eclectic programme of animations for young people.

Not to mention Chamonix’s multi-media centre and the different libraries in Les Houches, Servoz, Vallorcine and Les Pélerins. Accessible to both residents and tourists, they have many resources to discover the valley’s history … and to occupy during rainy days!
